This escape slide could be the future of emergency rescue

This escape slide could be the future of emergency rescue
You might have seen those emergency slides in an airline safety instruction handbook, but one Shanghai man is bringing them to your household.

Zhou Ronghui has designed a slide made of stainless steel and aluminum alloy, which can be used in high-rise buildings in case of an emergency.

This foldable slide, which is installed by the staircase and can be flipped open, will allow residents to slide from the 26th floor to ground floor within 90 seconds – taking the stairs might take a considerable longer time, according to Zhou. Residents can instantly unlock it and slide at the speed of 2 to 3 seconds per floor.

Zhou told thepaper.cn news portal that each floor is equipped with a switch and under emergency circumstances, the slide can be unlocked once residents press the switch.

To ensure that people aren’t injured by the slide’s aluminum sheet, Zhou has also allotted mats on each floor – they can provide an extra layer of protection.

Zhou said that over 90% victims are evacuated by stairs during emergency situations and around 90% of those escape routes are installed outside the building – the slide, he said, could be a better alternative.

Zhou has applied for a patent protection through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) to protect his product, according to thepaper.cn. And if everything goes well, after it’s tried, tested and approved, his product might soon end up in our apartment buildings.
