A 14-year-old boy can see again! And it's all thanks to an able medical team and the eye of some pig.
Southern Metropolis Daily reports that the peculiar cornea transplant was performed successfully by a team of doctors from Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou late last month. It was the first operation of its kind performed in southern China.
The teenager from Jiangxi province nearly lost the sight in his right eye earlier this year when he was injured by a firework. Fortunately, now more than a week after his surgery, the patient has regained his sight and his vision has reached 20/200, local news reports.
Doctors expect that by the end of his recovery his vision will be back up to 20/30.

According to SCMP, a Chinese professor believes that due to current shortages, only about one-third to a half of the 5 million patients suffering from corneal blindness in China will be helped.
