Girls squatting in public triggers heated online debate
Is squatting in public a sign of poor manners? That’s been one of the hot debates on social media in China over the weekend after a picture of two girls squatting at a subway station while waiting for the train was posted on Sina Weibo, the country’s largest micro-blogging platform.
The photo, which was posted on Saturday by a user named @WoJiaoSanKeYa (我叫三颗牙), carried a caption that read: “Why are today’s girls so ill-bred? Squatting down wherever they like? Isn’t it ugly?…”
In a matter of time, the image sparked thousands of comments. As of Sunday morning, there had been some 130,000 comments on the picture, with a large number of them being very critical of the girls.
“Squatting down in public is a reflection of being rude and uneducated,” wrote a user named @Douyajun.
"If you think this is normal, you must also be uneducated since childhood,” echoed @Afan-zou.
But then, there were others who thought that the criticism was unwarranted and elitist.
"Why can’t women squat down in public? Have they broken the law? If not… why can’t they - if they were very tired? …You are also not so educated by sending the photos without the permission of the girls…” argued @ZuoYeBen, a popular Weibo user followed by over eight million users.
"Firstly, squatting in public attracts attention, irrespective of a man or woman doing it. Secondly, it’s even all right to lie down as long as one is not undermining public order, or occupying public space or affecting others…” wrote a user named @JiaoShouYiXiaoXing.
Following the arguments, WoJiaoSanKeYa explained that he posted the image because he had asked the girls to move as they were occupying space near the gates, making it difficult to board the train. The girls, however, refused to move. Therefore, he says that he decided to share the picture of what he thought was an “uncivilized” act.
Moreover, this isn’t the only image of subway “misbehavior” that WoJiaoSanKeYa has shared. He’s also posted a number of pictures showing people begging, playing cards while sitting on the ground, and so on – all actions that he clearly finds problematic.
Amidst the moral arguments about civilized and uncivilized behavior, there are people who have sought to look at the issue from a public facilities point of view. People have cited examples of not having enough seats for travelers to rest while waiting and also the lack of facilities for mothers who are breastfeeding their babies.
