Chinese actress Viann Zhang’s floral dress a hit at Cannes Film Festival
The dress is the work of Hu Sheguang, one of the most controversial designers in China. This March, Hu already rocked China with his collection of northeastern Chinese quilted jackets at China Fashion Week. In less than two months, his unique design once again took the Internet by storm.
While some Chinese netizens say they are proud to see traditional Chinese elements on the world stage, more seem to find it difficult to understand the so-called “fashion.” Fashion columnist @gogoboi commented on his Weibo: “You thought she was walking the red carpet, but actually, she only went to Cannes to air out her quilt.”
Another Weibo user, @cocoyieren, sharply related the dress to the just-passed Chinese-style MET Gala in New York, where many outfit choices of the world’s stars were found to be rather odd by Chinese people: “I think Zhang should really go to the Met Gala instead. I’m kind of looking forward to see her standing together with Rihanna.”
Viann Zhang, on the other hand, seems not to be bothered by these voices at all. She explained on her official Weibo account: “People may think the dress is cheap and rustic, but for me it’s a childhood memory. I’m ready for all kinds of comments, regardless of good or bad.”
