China box office took in $548 million last week, shattering world record held by the US

 China's box office blasted yet another world record over the CNY break when it grossed $548 million in the space of a week.

That's a fair bit more than the previous world record of $529.6 million that the US grabbed after the release ofStar Wars: The Force Awakens on December 28. In the seven-day period from February 8th to Valentine's Day, China's box office made a bigger profit than it did over the entire year of 2006.

In the lead was The Mermaid, which followed up on its already record-breaking opening-day performance by grossing $275.1 million over the course of the week. It's already the No. 4 highest grossing movie in Chinese history, behind only Monster Hunt, Furious 7 and Transformers: Age of Extinction.

Runner-up was The Man From Macau 3 at $119.6 million, which is apparently terrible, but has still grossed more than Stars Wars in China. The Monkey King was close behind at $116.2 million.

At this rate, box office profits for the first half of this year are on their way to beating even last year's final figures.
