With Spring Festival drawing ever closer, the busiest time of the year for the Chinese railways begins today as millions begin the journey home to be reunited with their families for Chinese New Year.
According to China Daily, the National Development and Reform Commission estimates that during the Spring Festival travel period, which lasts from January 24 to March 3, the overall passenger volume nationwide will be 2.91 billion, 3.6 percent higher than that of last year.
At 0:26 a.m this morning, the first extra passenger trains laid on for the busy period departed from Beijing West Railway Station for Anhui province.
It's estimated that 11.8 million people will travel during the 40-day spring festival travel rush at the railway station this year, an increase of 5.1 percent from the same period of last year.
Last year China's railways, roads, airlines and waterways carried a total of 2.81 billion passengers during Spring Festival, a 3.5 percent increase on the previous year.
Yesterday a kindhearted group of Party officials in Hebei showed up at a local construction site to help migrant workers, who often have difficulty securing tickets home, go online to purchase their train tickets.
