At 85-years old, Father Chen has come to the conclusion that society’s obsession with money is meaningless. Therefore, after he earned 200,000 yuan by selling his home, he wanted to demonstrate to his son and daughter-in-law that this large quantity of cash was not going to do them any good. He taught them this valuable lesson by shredding the majority of the cash into pieces.
“Forget about the money!” he told the shocked couple.
Chen’s son claims that after his father had sold his home, he simply wanted to convince him to store the large amount of cash in the bank. Little did he know that his dad would react this way.
Thankfully 60,000 yuan of the original stockpile remained unshredded. The couple then took matters into their own hands and stored the cash in the bank, as they had learned previously what a polite suggestion would result in.
Having piles of yuan notes seems to be a dream come true for many in China, but Father Chen believes the opposite. However, it is not uncommon for fathers in China to make grand gestures for their children. One dad from Shanghai, for example, used the 2 million yuan he earned after selling his home to take his baby daughter on a 5-year trip around the world.
