Students shocked by creepy “baby grow” art piece

Students walking nearby the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts have been shocked by a creepy artwork installation – a line of babies apparently poking through the earth, forcing their heads and bodies above the surface, each with an eerie smile on its face.

But upon closer inspection the babies are clearly not real (thankfully), but just a couple of plastic baby dolls.

They are actually the project of a senior student at the art institute. The student named Zhang put ten dolls in the ground, each one progressively further out of the ground than the previous one, until the final baby in the line is fully grown out of the ground. The piece of work apparently expresses a meaning of “sprouting” and “thriving”. Zhang said she came up with the idea for the benefit of the school’s younger students, as a form of inspiration for their own creativity.

So how did the students see the artwork? While some told Hubei Economic TV Channel that they accepted it and found it interesting, others, however, said they found the babies really scary, and didn’t even dare to walk along the path next to them.
